To lend perspective to my opinion which is sure to be present in my posts, here is a brief synopsis of me.

Motorcycle History

I have been around motorcycles my whole life thanks to my Father. He always had a bike while I was growing up, I used to love going for rides with him. It is somewhat scary to think about; I had no idea of the danger that motorcycles bring at that age. Luckily my father always put a helmet on me, but that is it. No protection from the neck down, or hearing protection. Please don’t do this.

Before I was old enough to have a motorcycle my dad suffered I bad accident. On a country road someone decided to turn left right in front of him causing him to t-bone their car. This experience definitely steered me away from motorcycles for quite awhile. I didn’t understand why at the time, but he bought a new Harley while still living at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital. Now I do understand.

In my mid to late twenties my friends and I had a beer drinking influenced idea to get motorbikes, seemed like a great idea at the time. I am generally the type of person that when I set my mind to do something, I do it. Luckily, my uncle had an old Honda that I could use to take my skills test and get my endorsement.

I still remember the first trip on public roads I took. I’ve always been a good driver, I grew up with dirt bikes, atvs, snowmobiles. I have my Class A drivers license, I’ve driven 75,000 pound semi-trucks half way across the country. However, piloting a motorcycle, while also following all driving laws and, more importantly, watching out for all the people in cars around me was definitely a new challenge.

They say the statistics are much higher for accidents in your first two years of riding, I definitely believe that. That is about how long it took before defensive driving became second nature while on two wheels. I’ve found that it also takes a few months to get used to a new motorcycle, which is why it is so risky to take a friends bike for a ride.

Professional Experience

I have to admit, motorcycles are my second love, music is the first. I spent the first 10 years of my professional career doing sound for concerts. I travelled around the mid-west doing sound for all different genres, corporate and religious events and political rallies for George W Bush, John Kerry, Barack Obama and more.

After about eight years of spending way too much time living out of a suit case, I decided it was time to apply the BSCS degree I got from Grand Valley State University. I gradually shifted my focus from sound engineering to embedded software engineering. After 4 or 5 years of helping develop electronics, I switched over to mobile application development, where I have mostly stayed to today.

This switch ultimately lead to the company I started with some friends of mine called Envoy. While I still do some development, because I love it, mostly these days I make sure the lights stay on.

Motorcycle Goals

My ultimate goal is probably the same as a lot of adventure riders. Alaska. I want to push myself to do longer and longer trips. One of the big parts of this will be motorcycle camping. A trip to Alaska, for me, would not be fiscally possible if I stay in hotels the entire time. Additionally, the smaller weekend trips I take could would be free by camping on state or Bureau of Land Management camping areas.
